Challenge 1: Simple guitar, bass and drums mix.I'm going to be posting mixing challenges from time to time for us to work on together. Here's how it works: Our first challenge is a simple rhythm section with double tracked guitars, bass (which is faked, try to make it sound real since it's just a down-tuned guitar) and drums. Files: www.dropbox.com/s/z8sh5uiwp1lw4i5/rendered%20tracks.zip?dl=0Conditions of participation: Please share your final mix. Please also share how you made it! That is all. Just FYI, although I'm putting the samples here for you to use, they remain non-commercial, purely shared for educational/community purposes. If you want to use them for something else, please ask first.

MetalRenard, Alright dude, I gave it a shot. Used Reaper's inbuilt EQ, Thrillseeker XTC, and Classic Reverb. Left the guitars alone, though I added a send where they got a lil bit of reverb, Bass was boosted at 300Hz so it could take advantage of Thrillseeker's lowend exciter. Gave air to drums and boosted mids with Thrillseeker, all in all this took about 20 minutes or so. I think it sounds okay, let me know what you think! www.dropbox.com/s/xmhzmxxc1gxf2p9/Renard%27s.mp3?dl=0

Sorry the drum samples were quiet, I forgot to turn up the fader! Also one of the splash samples cuts off in the middle... Oh well. I used the same as you. I love the warmth in yours, mercyfuldeath, I find a lot of my work lacks that warmth. highballers, come join us! For me, I highpassed 250hz in the guitar, 90hz in the drums and 60hz in the bass. Bass: Cut 100hz, 400hz, 600hz, 1000hz, low pass from 6k. Boost 70hz, 300hz, 800hz. Guitar: Cut 600hz (wide), 1000hz, low pass from 7k. Boost 400hz, 1200hz. Drums: Cut 300hz, boost 600hz (for the snare) and from 4k+ to add sparkle and air to the cymbals. I put compressors on everything and I added some tube distortion to the snare drum (around 600hz) as well as tape distortion to the bass and guitar in the mids and highs. I added a little room reverb to the guitar. I didn't touch the master bus. I tried to stick to your "20 minutes" too, but ended up taking 30. There are tons of things I would tweak still but for 30 mins it's not bad. www.dropbox.com/s/zyeblaoos4hswvu/Challenge%201%20Quick%20Mix.mp3?dl=0For those interested, here are the tracks in the full mix. I hope to progress these challenges to this level of complexity eventually. www.dropbox.com/s/m60itycxkdc874o/Full%20Mix.mp3?dl=0There are synths and a full orchestra in this. Eventually I plan on adding vocals too... So let's get involved in these mixing challenges. Woop woop!

Took a stab at it. MetalRenard , highballers , mercyfuldeath , My Mix 1st attemptOh boy... don't know where to start. 1) Surgically removed the pickle (eq) from the bass players bum. (it was stuck in there pretty good) 2) Tried to compress/eq the drums. (but that's a tall task when they are all together on one track) 3) Panned guitars, each it's own mad eq'n (plus shifted the right one 10 ms and reversed phase) 4) Automated slight db increase on kick where it goes into hyper drive. 5) Automated eq sweep on bass where the drums go double kick hyper. (big mistake)6) Built outro on bass by automating pitch shift and added reverb (was just goofing around at this point) 7) Tried compressing master, supercharging master, exciting master (no go (too much "breathing"))8) EQ on master to bring back some crispness.9) Downloaded and A-B'd my mix against MetalRenard's & mercyfuldeath's & my first/second/third attempts on GOM player.Don't ask how long I spent monkeying around with this project... This was extremely fun (and good practice) and look forward to the next challenge.

Thanks for taking part! Could you fix your link so I can listen? You need to create a sharable link and put that here instead. Right click the file in dropbox for that option. I'd love to hear!

Yeah I'm new to Dropbox. That was an easy fix (sharing the file) though, thank you. I'm not really digging what I did with that mix yesterday, now that I listened with fresh ears. Listening fatigue really does skew one's perception. Gotta take breaks! 2nd attempt at this mix
Really not liking yesterdays attempt. edit*** Not really liking my 2nd attempt either LOL.3rd attempt For a simple challenge, either I am over analyzing, or just suck at audio engineering. In my defense for the latter scenario, I got say... the provided stems have the dynamic range of an octopus on acid. Not easily controlled or rectified. Patience is my Achilles Heel...This challenge was a good lesson. It's still fun though, and will probably hit this again. Cheers

Hehe it's not a challenge if it's easy... right???... Hahaha sorry, like I said, I forgot to fix the fader on the drums - it was low because I boosted it in mixing, FX etc so when I took them off it was super low. Would you guys be up for a 2nd challenge? highballers, mercyfuldeath, daveyh?

MetalRenard,Second challenge, sure bro, shoot. Speaking of which, you mind if I submit another set of tracks for a similar challenge, albeit one that deals with more 80's styled instruments.
