Theory has never been a strong point of mine. I understand some basics, I can harmonise and I know what terms MEAN but I can't always put them into practice effectively. I'm writing an album of sorts and I want each song to give me a new challenge. My last song was in 5/4, first time I've ever used that time signature. Next, I realised I almost never write in minor keys so my next song will be in minor. Here's what I have so far: www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/909298?updated=1580942938There are some things I like, others not so much. I realised the first 4 chords are basically the same as any other 4 chord song. Any advice how to change that? I like the feel so far, how can I develope this and keep it in the same mood? I'm sketching out ideas on piano before I add anything else. It will be synthwave/metal.

It's pretty good so far. What you have does sound like it's in a minor key, but it could use a little more. I'd suggest experimenting with the 1st position minor pentatonic scale. Just in case you're not familiar with it, it was originally made
for minor blues riffs but it works for just about anything else.
You possibly could pull some leads out of it and create a melody for your song, or you could work with chords and look for what sounds nice for you. Most of my songs are minor and I almost always use this scale for my compositions.

Thanks for replying. I've been listening and messing around with different instruments. I'm waiting for my 7 string guitar to arrive in the next 10 days or so and I'll work on it properly.
Cheers!

Have you tried using jazzy chords (or as I like to call them, SPICY chords) or somewhat unconventional ones? Personally I use this site as a reference of sorts. Sometimes, the progression's working fine, but it's just that we've used the same chord arrangement (power chords, major/minor) too often.
